Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress general secretary, voiced her concerns on Friday regarding the BJP’s approach to the upcoming assembly polls in Rajasthan. Addressing a large public gathering in Sikrai as part of the Congress’s campaign on the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), Priyanka drew attention to the BJP’s decision not to announce a chief ministerial candidate and the implications of running the election campaign based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity.
Priyanka subtly raised questions about whether Modi would effectively become the Chief Minister, indirectly taking a swipe at both the PM and the saffron party’s strategy.
She pointed out that the BJP’s failure to name a chief ministerial candidate stemmed from multiple contenders within the party who declared themselves as the future CM. In contrast, Priyanka emphasized the unity within the Congress despite not officially nominating a Chief Minister candidate, with Ashok Gehlot presently holding the position. This unity, according to Priyanka, is a defining characteristic of the Congress.
Interestingly, the Congress, too, has not officially announced its Chief Ministerial candidate in Rajasthan. Ashok Gehlot, while addressing the press at AICC headquarters in New Delhi, suggested that projecting a CM candidate in Congress might not be advantageous since such individuals rarely assume the position of Chief Minister after elections.
Talking about the welfare schemes of the Congress government, Priyanka asked, “When they (BJP) were in power, how many schemes did they launch in Rajasthan? It’s clear that the focus of Modi and the BJP is not on your well-being, but on remaining in power and strengthening themselves.”
A real leader looks at present & future
Regarding PM Modi’s commitments, Priyanka compared them to unfulfilled promises concerning the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP). On the subject of PSU privatization, she expressed concerns that the government’s policies took money from ordinary citizens to benefit large industrialists.
Priyanka contended that these policies had reduced job opportunities and weakened the reservation system. She further claimed that the BJP’s policies, including demonetization and GST, had harmed small and medium-sized businesses, exacerbating the unemployment situation. Priyanka criticized the BJP for introducing schemes like Agniveer in a time when unemployment rates were at a 45-year high. She also questioned why the BJP raised issues related to religion and caste during their campaign instead of focusing on development. Priyanka stressed the need for a new approach to politics based on service and compassion and encouraged the public to consider electing the Congress for a continued government in Rajasthan.
PM Modi has funds to purchase aircraft and build a fancy parliament building but not to waive farm loans or continue with OPS (old pension scheme),” she said. Public welfare can only be achieved through politics that is based on service and compassion, she said while asking people to repeat the Congress government in Rajasthan. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, while addressing the gathering, said the assembly election is not just for Rajasthan, but the future of the entire country will be decided by it. “We will fight this election on our development plank. BJP says that only the party symbol ‘lotus’ is its face. Will this lotus make roads,” he asked.
Sachin Pilot, the former Deputy Chief Minister, urged voters to break the pattern of changing governments every five years. He claimed that the Congress remained united while the BJP engaged in politics characterized by falsehoods and deceit.
