After providing significant tax relief to the middle class, the central government is now focusing on easing toll charges on national highways. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has hinted at a new uniform toll policy that could bring relief to millions of commuters.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Gadkari stated that research on the policy is complete, and an official announcement will be made soon. However, he did not confirm whether toll charges would be abolished or reduced.
Barrier-Free Toll Collection System in the Works
The government is also working on implementing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system. This barrier-free system aims to improve efficiency and reduce long queues at toll plazas.
The move comes just days after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a major tax break in the 2025-26 budget. Under the new policy, individuals earning up to ₹12.75 lakh per year will not have to pay income tax, benefiting nearly one crore taxpayers.
Gadkari on Toll Tax Memes
Mr. Gadkari also acknowledged the widespread social media memes and criticism regarding toll charges. He admitted that many people are unhappy with the toll system but assured that changes are on the way.
“Many people troll me for toll collection, but their anger will soon disappear,” he said.
Rising Toll Collections in India
Reports suggest that private cars account for 60% of traffic on highways but contribute only 20-26% of total toll revenue. In 2023-24, India collected ₹64,809.86 crore in toll revenue, marking a 35% increase compared to the previous year. Since 2000, toll plazas under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model have generated around ₹1.44 lakh crore in user fees.
Yamuna River to Become an Aircraft Landing Strip?
In another ambitious plan, Nitin Gadkari revealed that the Yamuna River could be transformed into a landing strip for aircraft. He cited the example of Sabarmati River in Gujarat, where a seaplane service was launched to the Statue of Unity in 2020.
The minister suggested that, once completed, passengers could travel from Delhi to Agra in just 13 minutes. If implemented, this project could revolutionize urban transportation and boost tourism in the region.
With these upcoming changes in toll collection and infrastructure development, the Modi government is aiming to enhance the country’s highway network and commuter experience. Stay tuned for further updates on this major policy shift!
