A Revolutionary Leap in Ocean Exploration
In a groundbreaking move towards transforming humanity into an aquatic species, UK-based company DEEP has unveiled plans for an advanced underwater base, set to be operational by 2027. This ambitious Rs 1,000 crore project aims to house humans 200 meters beneath the ocean’s surface, unlocking new frontiers in deep-sea exploration and marine research.
A Deep-Sea “International Space Station”
Drawing parallels with the International Space Station, DEEP’s Sentinel platform is designed to sustain long-term human habitation underwater. The facility will accommodate at least six residents, offering a controlled, pressurized environment that enables scientists, researchers, and marine specialists to live and work beneath the sea for extended periods.
“The Sentinel system is more than just a habitat—it’s an integrated ecosystem of cutting-edge submersibles, suits, and a holistic safety framework,” said Steve Etherton, President (EMEA) at DEEP. “It’s a first step in reshaping our understanding of the ocean.”
Oceans cover over two-thirds of the Earth and play a crucial role in climate regulation and oxygen production, yet much of their depths remain unexplored. With Sentinel, DEEP aims to push the boundaries of marine research, just as space exploration has done for astronomy.
DEEP’s state-of-the-art facility will leverage pioneering materials and 3D manufacturing techniques, including Europe’s largest WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) capability. The project has already received design approval in principle from DNV, a leading global certification body.
“This is not just a concept or a fundraising gimmick. We are already deep into advanced engineering, and manufacturing has begun,” confirmed Michael Shackleford, President (Global Infrastructure) at DEEP.
With Sentinel’s launch, DEEP is not just building an underwater base—it is laying the foundation for a future where humans can seamlessly exist beneath the waves. As the world watches, the dream of living under the sea is on the verge of becoming a reality.
