New Delhi: India is set to revolutionize emergency medical services with the introduction of vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air ambulances, marking a significant step in the country’s transportation and healthcare sectors. A $1 billion agreement has been signed with ePlane Company, a startup incubated at IIT-Madras, to supply 788 electric air ambulances, which will be deployed across every district in the country.
The non-binding deal is expected to transform emergency medical response in India’s congested cities and remote areas, offering rapid patient transport and life-saving interventions without the delays caused by road traffic. The ambulances will be delivered to ICATT (International Critical Air Transfer Team), India’s leading air ambulance service, ensuring nationwide coverage.
These futuristic aircraft, powered entirely by electricity, will have a top speed of 200 km/h and a range of 110 to 200 kilometers per charge. Each air ambulance will accommodate a pilot, a paramedic, a patient, a stretcher, and essential medical equipment, providing critical care during transport.
Founder of ePlane Company, Satya Chakravarthy, a professor at IIT-Madras, revealed that the company aims to start operations by late 2026 with an initial production capacity of 100 units per year. The startup has already raised $20 million and is now seeking an additional $100 million for prototype testing and certification.
The introduction of eVTOLs aligns with the Indian government’s broader push for next-gen urban mobility and sustainable transport solutions. The country’s eVTOL market is gaining traction, with companies like Archer Aviation, Sarla Aviation, and ePlane Company working on innovative air transport models. Even ride-hailing giant Uber is testing air taxi prototypes to ease urban congestion.
For now, ePlane Company is focusing on air ambulances before expanding into the air taxi segment, ensuring a smoother market entry and organic growth.
With traffic congestion worsening in Indian cities, the need for fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly medical transport has never been greater. The deployment of eVTOL air ambulances will bridge the gap between rural and urban healthcare services, offering quick access to critical care for patients in need.
India’s leap into aerial emergency medical services marks a major technological and healthcare milestone, setting the stage for a future where air mobility becomes an integral part of everyday life.
