Akash Mukherjee and Lubna Sukte, both 28, were on a date at Bandra’s Bandstand area in Mumbai when the former tried killing his girlfriend after she refused to have sexual intimacy with him. Mukherjee was later arrested on Wednesday night after onlookers caught him and brought the matter to police’s attention. He has been remanded by a metropolitan magistrate to police custody for two days.

According to the statement given by the 28-year-old woman to the Bandra police on Thursday, she was in a relationship with Mukherji for the past one year. While she lived in Bhiwandi, her friend lived in Kalyan. Both were employed. However, on Wednesday, they decided to go for an outing and accordingly met at Kalyan station at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday. They then boarded a train to to CST and from there went to the Gateway of India. In the evening around 5.00 p.m. they went to Bandra station by a harbour line train and from there went to Bandstand, Bandra, in an autorickshaw.
The police rushed her to Bhabha muncipal hospital. Mukherji tried to flee from the spot, but the police caught and arrested him. The police said the woman had suffered serious injuries on her head and nose, but her condition was “stable.” According to senior inspector Rajesh Dhevre, a case under IPC 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against Mukherji and further investigations are being conducted.
