The courts of the land seem to have become the battleground for parties as an unprecedented number of legal cases are being filed by leaders and parties to extricate themselves from tricky legal muddles or seek umbrage at the vendetta politics of their rivals or to protect themselves from the defamation cases. In this ‘court politics’, a new political matrix is unfolding as opposition parties are uniting to take on the BJP. The BJP, on the other hand, has preferred to call it a congregation of the corrupt who want to protect their own political moorings.
The political outcome of these cases will influence the larger politics of the country in the runup to 2024 general elections. The list also includes BSP leader Yaqub Quereshi, Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu and SBSP MLA Aftab Ansari.
In Assam, several defamation cases have been filed against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Pawan Khera. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a defamation case against AAP leader Manish Sisodia.
In December last year, the Maharashtra police filed 11 FIRs against former MP and NCP leader Anand Paranjpe for organising a protest against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. NCP leader Jitendra Ahwad is also facing several cases.
