Police track posts on social media in advance of the anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima

Pune: In preparation for the 206th anniversary of the battle of Koregaon Bhima at the village, the district collectorate has instructed the city of Pune and its rural counterpart to start security plans, surveillance, and other safety measures. the state home department has directed the police to keep an eye on social media posts about the festivities and events.

The state has seen multiple Maratha reservation rallies over the past few months, coinciding with the implementation of security measures and social media surveillance. If any false, defamatory, or divisive statements are disseminated on social media and chat apps, the police have directed that social media group admins and message forwarders will be held responsible and that individuals engaged will face severe legal consequences.

“We have taken adequate steps to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of the event,” stated district collector Rajesh Deshmukh. The police have been directed to make sure that all safety and security regulations are put into practice and adhered to, and all pertinent directives from the state government are being followed.

Pune rural police discovered more than 100 social media posts in 2022 that were meant to upset the peace and order following the 205th commemoration of the battle of Koregaon Bhima at Perne Phata. According to officials, the police will be enforcing prohibitory orders for social media posts in accordance with Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which gives public officials the authority to issue orders in urgent circumstances before any law and order issue.

The standards ban the dissemination of false information, rumours, and messages that are sensitive to the community on any kind of media platform. They also forbid the use of flex board, hoardings, and posters that contain such content.

According to the ruling, “any action found in violation of these orders may be prosecuted under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.” The area deals with defying legally issued directives from public servants, according to a district administration bulletin.

Every year, a sizable gathering of Ambedkarites gathers at the Jaistambh in Bhima Koregaon. All required preparations are underway for the peaceful commemoration of the historic fight at Perne village, according to the district administration.
