290 Baloch activists who had been detained when they tried to stage a rally in Islamabad last week were released by Pakistani police on Monday. Days after demonstration organisers gave police a deadline to release everyone detained, they were freed. The campaigners left Turbat, a town in the Baluchistan province, on Thursday and travelled 1,600 miles to protest extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances in the southwest that have been devastated by militancy.

When security personnel used batons and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators, who were largely women, some of them had brought their children, who were between the ages of 7 and 12. The 24-year-old Balaach Mola Bakhsh passed away in November while being held by the police, and they wished to bring attention to his case.
