Yerawada jail tragedy: Undertrial found dead, suicide suspected – Mental Health crisis highlighted

A 30-year-old undertrial prisoner was discovered dead in Yerawada Central Prison in Pune, suspected of taking his own life. The inmate, originally from Junnar, had been admitted for psychiatric treatment at the prison hospital. He was found lifeless on a porch near the infirmary on Monday morning around 7:25 am. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 7:35 am.

The deceased had been held in judicial custody since July 16 last year, following charges of attempted murder filed against him by Otur police under Pune Rural jurisdiction. This tragic incident has prompted both jail officials and the Yerawada police to launch separate investigations.

Furthermore, prison authorities revealed that the deceased had previously attempted suicide just three days after his arrival at the jail. This unfortunate incident adds to the grim history of Yerawada Central Prison, where incidents of prisoner suicides have occurred in the past, including the recent case of Jitendra Babulal Shinde, also known as Pappu, who allegedly took his own life in September last year.
